This could be your opportunity to model with one of Snohomish’s best-recognized photography brands. Here below is all the info you need to know to have a chance at being part of this program.

Who can be a model?

• You're a 2017 Junior who will be graduating in 2018

• You attend one of the following local High Schools: Archbishop Murphy, Bothell, Cedarcrest, Glacier Peak, Jackson, Kamiak, Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Marysville Getchell, Monroe, Woodinville, or Snohomish

What exclusive things do senior models receive?

• A special session rate of $75 that is available to no one else (Normally $250 per hour)

• We will have a creative planning and clothing consultation to design a session that is uniquely you

• Hair and makeup is provided for girls at our local partner salon – we photograph that experience also!

• We’ll give you an extended 1-2 hour session with up to four clothing changes

• You get 5 web-sized images of your choice to show off on social media

• We will custom design a pack of 25 beautiful, press-printed senior rep cards

What is expected of our senior models?

• Your sessions must be scheduled and photographed between May and June of 2017

• To remain in the program, you must send us at least three successful referrals – 1 within 90 days and at least 2 more within 6 months. If the minimum number of referrals are not reached in the allotted time, the student will be out of the rep program and the parents will be required to pay the balance of our session fee which would be $225 + taxes

• Parents must be a part of the process, meaning they attend the consultation, they are present at the photography session, and they have an in-person viewing/order consultation

What Authors Need to Know About Headshots

It happens to me a few times a year. An author calls me up needing new head shots for the next big book release. They explain they will require full copyright. This is an odd request for just a simple portrait so we’ll dig a little deeper, asking, “What do you mean by ‘Full Copyright?’” The author then proceeds to describe a “License.” 

“Okay, you mean, can we license the image for you?” I reply.

“No” they say with conviction, “I must get the full copyright transferred to me.”

I must pause here and acknowledge it is the members of the photography profession who are solely responsible for perpetuating this confusion between the meanings of Copyright and Licensing. Prospective clients are only repeating the term that has been ingrained in their memory for years now. On behalf of the photographers who have misused the word copyright, I apologize.

Let’s start over and see if we can’t unpack their meanings in a way that is much easier to understand...

• Copyright: The person who created the original artistic work has the exclusive legal rights of ownership from the first moment of creation.

• License: The owner and originator gives someone permission to use the work that they have created.

It can be argued that the legal definitions are actually more complicated, but with respect to making a portrait, they’re quite simple. Both terms are designed to grant a specific kind of right to an individual. However, one is specific to the creator and owner of the work, the other is a grant from the owner to the one who wants to use the work.

Consider these three common scenarios…

1. I purchase and install Microsoft Windows 10...do I now own the entire Microsoft platform or am I granted a license to use the software?

2. Your friend downloads U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” on the iTunes store...are they now the exclusive owner of the song or just granted a copy to download and listen to?

3. Blackstone Audio is going to produce an audio version of your book...will you and your publishing company relinquish all rights and ownership of the book to Blackstone or will they be granted a license to read, record, and distribute the audio version?

So when an author asks a photographer for full copyright on a photo, do they actually mean they want the photographer to (1) send them the master files, (2) transfer all ownership over to them, (3) destroy the original copy, and (4) never have the right to show the image in their photography portfolio? Likely, this is not what the author actually meant.

What the author really wants is the right to reproduce the image on the inside cover of their book, include the image with a press release or media kit, upload one to their website or social media profile, and print something up for speaking engagements.

Best Way to Organize Personal Images

Recently a client asked me, "What is the best way to organize my own personal images?" This is such a great question with the current pace of developing technology. It's something I've given a lot of consideration because I am just as passionate about being organized as I am about photography.

There probably are many ways to do this, but here is an easy system that has worked for me over the past 10 years. It follows this basic convention...

Naming Convention: [YEAR]-[MO]-[DY] [Unique Name]

Example: 2016-02-08 Spring Trip to Hill Park

In the screenshot below, you can see I also further sort folders by "year" and "decade" just for my own ease.  

Within the folders, I carry the same, simple naming convention to the individual files but add an image number at the end. Example: 2016-02-08 Spring Trip to Hill Park (x of y)

My rationale is simple. How will my kids want to receive these image libraries one day?  When they've grown, what applications will they be using? Think about it...iPhoto, Aperture, and Picasa were image management leaders and they are all dead. Flickr is suffering a slow, painful death. Likely, your organizational structure will be the only thing that carries on. Using this naming convention means my children are guaranteed to receive all the images in chronological order. They will easily navigate to life events by searching keywords within Finder or File Explorer. They will be able to effortlessly import these memories into the apps of the future.

10 Mistakes Seniors Make with Portraits

You want your senior images to be amazing, right? We see mistakes happen often with seniors, many of which can totally ruin your shoot. One of the best way to avoid things you shouldn’t do is by going with a professional photographer who has experience and ability to walk you through the entire senior portrait process.

Here are the 10 biggies to avoid...

1. Failing to make a careful choice on your photographer: Not all senior photographers are equal. Many may have a style that doesn’t match yours so start by reviewing portfolios from several area photographers. Consider if the photographer has credibility in your community because there may be a reason people are going to them or avoiding them altogether. Meeting with your photographer in person beforehand is a must! There is no better way to learn if you truly click with them. When you feel the photographer fit is right and they understand your desires for the shoot, you will be able to collaborate together and create amazing images you will love! 

2. Not taking a little time to plan the photo session: This is another reason it is critical to have a planning session with your photographer in advance. Without preparation, the images will feature less of your personality. You might get some nice shots, but it is truly a shame when they do not capture anything about your senior or high school experience.

3. Not giving proper consideration to theme and location: The theme and location should fit your personality and interests. It should be an extension of who you are in the images. It is a key part of setting a unique tone and feel in portraits. Don’t just go to the local park or that same location you know all the other seniors are using. Work with your photographer to find something really special.

4. Choosing friend or family member to take your photos: Your senior photography session is likely the second most important photography event in your life (Your future wedding being #1). Risking your images to someone who is just learning the camera is too great. Professionals know how to guide you through the complete process, how to pose you in flattering ways, and create beautifully lit and composed images you are proud to display. Look back through last year’s yearbook and see if you can spot who skipped out on a real photographer.

5. Doing your own makeup: This is a time to trust your makeup to an artist, someone who is experienced and refined. Makeup for a photo shoot is different than what you wear every day. If the product or contouring is wrong, you may not like the way it looks in the final images

6. Leaving hair to the last minute: As you already know, hair can make or break your look. Most guys and girls look best about two weeks after a haircut when it doesn’t look too crisp. If you will be going to a stylist before the session, go with a look that is consistent with who you are, but with a little extra life. If you don’t normally wear your hair up, don’t go with up.

7. Not taking your portraits seriously: This most often applies to the guys who are just going along with portraits to appease mom. The truth is, these images will likely represent you for the next several years. What you put into your portrait experience is what you will get out of it. Well-seasoned photographers already know most guys feel a little uncomfortable getting their photos done, but it is their job to help put you at ease and forget your nerves so you look cool.

8. Taking your portrait too seriously: When you are trying too hard, it shows up in photos. Be flexible with your photographer and willing to try things that seem a little different. The more you relax and go with it, the more natural your images will look. You even have permission to be silly and have fun with it!

9. Choosing the wrong clothes: Sometimes what we feel looks good in the real world simply does not work in the 2D world of the camera. We have seen seniors go with clothes they thought they wanted (regardless of our recommendations) and later dismiss a whole selection of images because they didn’t like how they looked in that outfit. Your photographer should be able to guide you through clothing choices that helps you look your best while preserving your personal style.

10. Using the same photographer everyone else does: Each photographer has a distinct style. While the photographer all the other seniors are using might be good, your photos might start to look like everyone else’s. A different photographer can bring a new and unique look to your images that stands out among all the rest.

Number One Mistake Brides Make With Flowers

Deciding on flowers for your wedding is an important decision. Some brides prefer doing the floral themselves while others hire a florist, but one thing is for certain, it is easy to make mistakes. According to Tiffany at Flowers by Tiffany, the biggest mistake a bride can make with her flowers is not choosing natural flowers or colors. Tiffany explained that too often, brides try to match their flowers exactly with their color scheme without thinking if that flower comes naturally in the chosen color. There is nothing wrong with using some silk flowers if you want to have a keepsake bouquet, but when you are walking down the aisle at the craft store and see the perfect colored rose, double check that roses can actually come in that color before buying a few dozen of them. She said unnatural colored silk flowers, as well as dyed real flowers, can completely ruin a floral arrangement.

Along with creating problems with your bouquets, using dyed flowers can also leak their color out the stems and no one wants to think about blue dye dripping down their dress as they walk down the aisle. So just remember to keep the flowers looking natural and they will be beautiful on your big day!

10 Ways to Save on a Wedding, Without Killing the Spirit

Being smart about your wedding and where to use your money, doesn’t mean having a cheap event. By focusing on a few principles, you can still maintain the spirit of the day you always dreamed of. Yes, it will require you to be a little more creative, but creativity always means more unique and personal.

Here are the 5 basic principles to follow…

• Set expectations - Understand you can’t have everything, no one can

• Less is more - Doing less in one area means more in another

• Be intentional about core items - Focus intensely on what is important

Begin by identifying the top two or three core items your wedding day must have. From here on out, these items are the filter by which all other decisions will be compared against. Is it the venue, a destination, or a season? Will you invest more in photography, videography, or music? Also consider which things you want people to remember after the wedding. Will it be the decorations, flowers, alcohol, food, or photo memories? 

10 ways to save smart

1. Trim your list. While inviting everyone you have ever known would be nice, cutting the guest list down is the single greatest way to save because it has a significant trickle-down effect. Limiting the attendees saves on all the other costs like venue size, catering, centerpieces, invitations, rentals, extra cake, drinks, and so on. It makes your wedding appear exclusive, not cheap.

2. Just because it is traditional doesn’t mean you have to do it. Doing traditional things just for the sake of doing them lengthens the event, adds some costs and requires vendors to stick around longer. If it isn’t you, ditch it.

3. If at all possible, avoid the prime times. Most wedding vendors have to maintain higher minimum booking fees during the busiest times of the year. Weekdays are always more affordable than weekends. Prime dates between May and October are always the most expensive so look at times between November and April.

4. DIY with class. DIY only looks cheap when there is too much DIY going on. Use it in one or two select areas you’re really excited about and your wedding is guaranteed to have a personal touch people will remember and talk about. Get started with these DIY Wedding Ideas on Pinterest.

5. Choose your colors wisely. Going with the seasonal colors saves money because you are also going with the seasonal flowers that are readily available in your area.

6. Look for combos. Many wedding vendors have the ability to combine services. Some DJ’s also offer lighting. Some Photographers do video. Some bands also MC. Some caterers can provide drinks or cakes.

7. Consider things that aren’t flowers. Just because it is outside of the norm, doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful. We have seen stunning arrangements of herbs, wheat, sticks, ferns, evergreens, cactus, pine cones, and even paper. Also, be sure to have a look at these non-floral centerpieces. 8. Be selective on the drinks. Having countless alcoholic drinks available for guests is a huge cost. Limiting the selection turns it into a personal reception touch. If you have a favorite wine, craft beer, or cider, feature it proudly!

9. Make a smarter venue choice. Look for wedding venues that have their own natural character to avoid the cost of excessive decor. Choose a venue where you can host both the ceremony and reception to cut down on travel, time, and logistical expenses. Some venues will permit outside vendors which allows you more flexibility. Many venues include their own equipment and selections of decor you would otherwise need to rent.

10. Consult a bride. Who do you know that has been recently married? Brides are always eager to share insight from their wedding experience. Many things can only be learned in hindsight after the wedding so take a girlfriend out for coffee and ask what she would have done differently. What does she remember most? Was there anything she wished she had included? What things seem less important or are forgotten now?

The spirit of the wedding is you and what you put into it. The secret is to invest in the things you care about most. Guests come to support and celebrate the two of you and would rather enjoy the experience than extravagance. Remember also that some of the most elegant weddings are smaller affairs.

Summer Activity Ideas Near Snohomish County - #1

Visit Skykomish for a Free Train Ride

If your crossing Steven's Pass, the kids will be thrilled if you make a point to stop off in Skykomish. Located just two blocks off Hwy 2, the Great Northern & Cascade Railway operates a Museum and miniature 1/8th scale train to celebrate the heritage and history of the rails. It's much larger than one would first think with nearly half a mile of rail that carries riders through realistic tunnels and over trestles.

Inside the museum, kids will learn about history through a touch-and-feel experience. They are encouraged to explore vintage items of technology like telegraphs, telephones, and typewriters.

Staffed by volunteers and model train enthusiasts, this non-profit organization is open every weekend of the summer through October. Kids and adults are welcome to ride as many times as they like. Donations are welcomed and will assist with future developments like expanded rail lines, small scale buildings, and other interesting pieces of history.

You might not have known it, but Skykomish also has charming diners and shops you can visit while in town.

10 Ways to get Yourself out of a Wedding Planning Rut

Are you overwhelmed with wedding planning? Is it sucking your creative energy dry? Don’t worry, it’s normal and happens to everyone. Here’s a little secret...even your wedding vendors experience this at times. The good news is we vendors have learned ways to lift ourselves out of the rut and get our creative juices flowing again. These are 10 easy things you can do too!

1. Find your creative space: It is any place you can go where you feel alive and find creative energy. It might be a coffee shop, a gallery, a park, the library, on the beach, a quiet spot in nature, secluded office with music, or a comfy chair with a glass of wine.

2. Break it down into small, easy pieces: Write down what you want for the wedding. Break it down into all the pieces that have to come together. Choose just one easy piece you can do right now. Just do it one thing at a time!

3. Free flow: Grab a pen and paper and start writing out all the wedding ideas that have been running wild in your head. It doesn’t have to make sense or be organized, but just get them out on paper as they come to you. When the ideas begin to slow down or stop, start a new page and bring an assemblance of order to everything you have written.

4. Get outside, get your blood pumping: Go for a long walk, a hike, or run. It is amazing what fresh air and a little exercise can do for the health of your mind. When you return to the wedding planning you will notice how much more focused you feel.

5. Delegate the things that are bogging you down: You don’t have to go it alone. Your friends and family want to help, so feel free to rely on them for the things you don’t want to worry about. No one can be good at everything and, chances are, you know someone who is already better at something you need to have done. A good wedding coordinator is also a valuable person to have on your team.

6. Leave it alone: Just walk away from the planning for a while. Go out for a nice dinner with your fiance and commit to talking about anything in the world, except the wedding.

7. If you aren’t excited about it, dump it: Brides often feel they have to include something because it’s the way it’s always been done or maybe what someone else expects. If you aren’t passionate about it, don’t waste your creative energy on it.

8. Create a self-imposed deadline: Sometimes you just have to force yourself to dig in with a healthy sense of urgency. Actualize it by telling your family and friends what you are committing to. Broadcast your goal on social media. Set reminders and calendar items. Just get ‘er done!

9. Explore something else: Get away from the details of the wedding and explore something new. It could be learning a new skill that can help you with something else wedding related. It could be just doing something else you enjoy or have always wanted to try. It could even be starting a book you’ve been meaning to make time for.

10. Have a mini retreat: Plan a getaway to remove yourself from the daily bustle. Go somewhere you have never been. A place where you can unplug and get some rest...then see what happens.

10 Things to Never do in your Professional Headshot

In a fast moving, snap judgment, online world, your professional headshot is indispensable. Years ago, first impressions were made in-person, today they are made through digital media. Your headshot precedes you like a digital handshake to prospective clients you have yet to meet. What does your current headshot say about you? Would you buy from that person?

If you want to stand out...

1. Never dress in less than your best. Your customers want to see you as the competent business person you are, so nothing less than the best will do. Professional business attire is ideal for most everyone. Uniforms are, of course, appropriate if it is how your customer expects to see you.

2. Never wear clothes that are loose or baggy. Sometimes we like to hide behind our clothing, but it can often add the appearance of extra bulk in the final image.

3. Never wear big jewelry. Large loop earrings and statement necklaces might be part of your style, but in a portrait, they are overpowering. Prominent jewelry draws people’s attention away from seeing who you are. There are ways to show your style while keeping it simple.

4. Never reveal too much skin. People’s eyes are naturally drawn to the brightest thing in the portrait which, for 100% of the white population, is your skin. You don’t have to cover up from head to toe, but just consider you are representing your company image and not necessarily yourself.

5. Never bring only one clothing option. More clothing choices just mean more options to choose from in your final portraits. Different looks might be appropriate for different situations or social profiles. At the least, it will allow you to mix your headshots up from time to time to keep things looking fresh.

6. Never wear busy patterns. The human eye is drawn to strong patterns so you want to avoid anything that is too complex, too bold, or too contrasty. Plain solids or small subdued patterns are always best. If you are aren’t sure, consult your photographer

7. Never wear logos. Unless it is part your uniform, a competing logo at best is a distraction and at the worst is brand confusion.

8. Never wear yoga pants. There are very few professions where yoga pants are considered to be appropriate attire. Yoga instructors cover most of them.

9. Never forgo the ironing. There’s nothing worse than a floppy collar. Freshly pressed and crisp clothing is the only way to go.

10. (Almost) Never wear solid white. People often don’t end up liking they way they look in white for many reasons. It can be the clothing item looks bright and featureless, that it blends into a lighter background, or the item is more prominent than the subjects face. White can also give the illusion of added bulk or create unnatural reflections below the chin. If you wish to try white, be sure to come ready to go with a backup clothing plan.

• The server is concealed nicely in the converted wardrobe cabinet

• The rolling table moves around the room to be desk space, a packaging station, and a gear staging station

• All packing materials are in easy reach and stored in vertical space

• The sayings that keep me focused surround clock which is where I most often look when loosing focus

If you are energetic and personable, this could be your opportunity to work with one of Snohomish’s best-recognized boutique photography brands. Jared M. Burns Photography is in its 8th year of operation and experiencing a lot of recent growth. We intend to expand our effectiveness in 2016 to better meet the needs of our client base by bringing on a contract team member who can help get us to the next level.

The right person for this associate photographer role should have an upfront personality that is comfortable connecting with our female clients who are interested in beauty, health, weddings, and babies. This would be ideal for someone who just enjoys creating great imagery and is seeking flexible, part-time work without the overhead expense and responsibility of managing their own business.

This contract position is paid hourly, but it should be noted that there is the possibility of temporary slow seasons that can result in erratic work and income. There may also be new growth opportunities in the near future for the right motivated individual.

 CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONS

• Able to work flexible hours

• High School Diploma or equivalent

• Work on some Saturdays, especially through the prime summer months

• 18 years or older

• Have a business license (if you don’t have one yet, we can help)

• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs on occasion

• Access to your own phone, computer, lenses, and camera (Nikon preferred, but not required)

• Must have driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation

• Able to stand and walk for long periods of time or bend and kneel as needed

• Have reasonable hearing and eyesight

• Must be available to work some evenings and weekends

• One year of some photography experience preferred

• Experience shooting some weddings, family, or baby portraits (preferred, but not required)

• Willing to train or attend learning programs

• Must be willing to sign a Nondisclosure and a Non-compete (6 mo. / 35 mi.)

 COMPENSATION

• Contract $20-50 per hour depending on client job and experience

• Additional hours of jobs available as the company grows

Accepting Applications!

Jared M. Burns Photography is looking for a few special seniors with an upfront and outgoing personality to represent at their high school! This could be your opportunity to model with one of Snohomish’s best-recognized photography brands. Here below is all the info you need to know to have a chance at being part of this program.

Who can be a model?

• You're a 2016 Junior who will be graduating in 2017

• You attend one of the following local High Schools: Glacier Peak, Snohomish High School, Henry M. Jackson, Woodinville, Marysville Getchell, Monroe, Lake Stevens, or Cedarcrest

What exclusive things do senior models receive?

• A special session rate of $75 that is available to no one else (Normally $250 per hour)

• We will have a creative planning and clothing consultation to design a session that is uniquely you

• Hair and makeup is provided for girls at our local partner salon – we photograph that experience also!

• We’ll give you an extended 1-2 hour session with up to four clothing changes

• You get 5 web-sized images of your choice to show off on social media

• We will custom design a pack of 25 beautiful, press-printed senior rep cards

• Your images will also be featured on the blog and in our next senior magazine

• Your parents will save and extra 20% on any paper prints or digitals products they order from the session

BONUS Incentives!

• You get $20.00 CASH for each successful referral you send us (A successful referral means they book and pay for their session before the season is over)

• 5 successful friend referrals gets you $25.00 Alderwood Regal Cinema Gift Card (That adds up to $125!)

• 10 successful friend referrals gets you a $50.00 Gift Card to your favorite clothing store (That adds up to $250!)

• 15 successful friend referrals gets you $250.00 Cash (Hopefully you will put it towards college!) (That adds up to $550!!!)

What is expected of our senior models?

• Only 10 models will be chosen - No more than 2 from the same school

• Student model and parents must commit to working exclusively with Jared M. Burns Photography throughout the 2016-2017 year (You may not promote another photographer, a family member’s, a friend’s, or your own portrait photography)

• Your sessions must be scheduled and photographed between May and June of 2016

• To remain in the program, you must send us at least three successful referrals – 1 within 90 days and at least 2 more within 6 months. If the minimum number of referrals are not reached in the allotted time, the student will be out of the rep program and the parents will be required to pay the balance of our session fee which would be $225 + taxes

• Parents must be a part of the process, meaning they attend the consultation, they are present at the photography session, and they have an in-person viewing/order consultation

Day 20:  Nite Ize Gear Tie Reusable Black - Range $3-$16

They say these are gear ties for cords and equipment, but they're in my emergency kit and get used for so much more. They can bunch up excess clothing fabric behind models, hold and position odd pieces of art, they mold into custom stands for weird shaped products or hidden support for props, and best of all, they're strong enough to hold speed lights in strange hidden locations. The ROI for me with these has been in the multi-thousands. I recommend getting some large and small.

Day 21:  Ravelli 12 Pack of Photo Video Muslin Background Clips - $17.69

If you have been using A-clamps from the hardware store, stop. A set of 12 A-clamps from a hardware store will run you about $36 and they won't always work quite right with your photo gear. Also, nothing says amateur like neon-green or construction-orange rubber grips. is time to look a little more professional and at less than half the cost, you have no excuse.

Carrying gear to and from gigs really stinks, but rolling it...that is the way to go! This is a great option for some of the heavy stands.

5 Ways to End a Snohomish Summer

And just like that, summer's coming to a close. The 2016 school year is about to begin. The end of summer deserves to be celebrated so it is time take a moment and plan a last hurrah in one of the Top 10 Coolest Towns in America. 

Here are five fun ideas to help you send off summer...

1. Udderly Sweet: If it isn't yet a tradition, it should be. Load up some friends or family and head over to the best frozen yogurt place in the valley up at Snohomish Station. Grab tables out front and enjoy your carefully crafted treat for one last outdoor evening. Visit Udderly Sweet Frozen Yogurt

2. Lord Hill Regional Park: You meant to get out hiking more, but summer sure slipped by. There is still time to visit the northwest forest trails at Lord Hill only 5 minutes outside of town. 3. Snohomish Aquatic Center: As the newest and coolest indoor pool North of Seattle, it is certainly one of the most popular places in town for family fun. It's a perfect place for one last escape from the late summer heat. Visit the Snohomish Aquatic Center

4. Hot Air Balloon Ride: Here in town we think of balloons as the official city bird so it goes without saying that nothing is more Snohomish than a hot air balloon ride. Make a once-in-a-lifetime memory and enjoy the setting summer sun from the best vantage point over Snohomish County. Visit Arial Balloon, Balloon Depot, or Over the Rainbow for availability.

5. Flowing Lake: Only a short drive up the hill from town, it might possibly be one of the best places in the area to relax. Gather up some food, drinks, swim gear, and that book you wanted to finish. Make a whole day of it with an old-fashion picnic and leisurely afternoon on the shores of this pristine lake. Even better, turn it into the last camping trip of the season in the Flowing Lake Campground. Visit Flowing Lake

Kyle + Stephanie: Echo Falls and Washington Ferry Wedding Photographer

Kyle and Stephanie were one of my favorite couples to photograph this past year. They share a love for nature, peace, and higher calling that I can identify with and admire. In fact its what shaped their wedding day and lead them to holding two very special ceremonies. The first was an intimate yet splendorous morning ceremony among the trees at Sequim Bay State Park. It was followed by stunning formal wedding portraits on the Washington State Ferries which I have never seen done before. The second ceremony and full reception was held at the beautiful Echo Falls Golf Club where they were met with a tremendous show of love and support from friends and family, some of whom came from around the world.
