How do you get the husband on board with family portraits?

How do you get the husband on board with family portraits?

This is one of the top concerns I hear from wives.

Here’s the reality: Women are born wanting beautiful portraits. Guys—not so much. See, guys are experiential. They don't get things until they go do things.

(And every man reading this nods, thinking to himself, "That’s fair.")

To a lot of dads, a photo session sounds like a hassle. If it were up to them, they’d skip the prep, planning, and shoot, and instead go straight to Amazon for a finished picture of their family, order it, collect the reward points, and take it out of the box, ready to hang on the wall.

If only that were possible, right?

Hey, it’s not that Dad doesn’t love the family, or that he wouldn't treasure the memories. It's just that he doesn't get the experience of it yet.

Here is where most moms take a wrong turn at the start:

Mom: "The kids are growing so fast. I’d like to look into family portraits."

Dad: "Alright, you go ahead and talk to the photographer and tell me what they say."

Mom: "Fantastic!"

Whoops, not fantastic! Do you see the problem there? Dad just opted out, and Mom didn't recognize it.

Of course, you’ll talk through the details before next steps, but what will any of that mean to him? Why would he feel invested? He wasn't part of the conversation from the beginning.

HERE'S THE SECRET

Invite Dad into the process from step one!

Commit to attending the initial consultation together. Remember, when men experience something, they understand it. As he participates, he moves from passive observer to active partner. A consultation is just information—getting that information together allows you to make a joint decision on what’s right for your family.

IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE

Keep Dad out of the loop, and he’ll stay disengaged. Bring him into the process, meaning the initial consultation, and watch him become fully invested in the successful outcome you both want.
